What kind of support is available?
SLAs are no longer available for the stand-alone version of ProMedia Carbon.
SLAs are available for WFS, which can use ProMedia Carbon and/or ProMedia Xpress as transcode engines. WFS allows the use of Carbon Stand-alone dongles, so additional Carbon licenses may not be needed.
If you have an existing SLA, please contact Harmonic directly for support. http://harmonicinc.com/services-support
Can I get a free trial for ProMedia Carbon, WFS, and/or Xpress?
ProMedia Carbon stand-alone is dongle-based, so free trials are unavailable. If a license is needed temporarily, then a rental agreement can be negotiated.
Free trials are available for WFS, running either Carbon or Xpress, directly from Harmonic. You can request a trial here.
Is X format supported?
ProMedia Carbon only supports 8-bit codecs up to HD resolutions. For a complete list of formats ProMedia Carbon supports, see this document.
ProMedia Xpress supports up to 12-bit 4K. For a list of formats ProMedia Xpress currently supports, see the bottom of this document.
WFS uses both ProMedia Carbon and Xpress and inherits the presets from each.
Does ProMedia Carbon support ProRes?
ProMedia Carbon only supports 8-bit codecs up to HD resolutions. Apple has licensed ProRes support for ProMedia Carbon, but only with 8-bit import and export. This means that 10-bit ProRes files cannot be transcoded to 8-bit ProRes through Carbon.
The ProRes license is only available on Windows Server Operating Systems and requires an additional license.
ProRes is not supported in ProMedia Xpress.
What is ProMedia Carbon?
Powered by Harmonic’s Rhozet® technology, ProMedia® Carbon is a file-based transcoding solution that facilitates the conversion of media to a massive array of acquisition, editing, broadcast, web and mobile formats. It can run as a stand-alone application or as part of a multi-node, fully automated rendering farm under the control of the Harmonic WFS file-based workflow system.
Part of the ProMedia family of optimized multiscreen and production workflow solutions, ProMedia Carbon supports all major SD and HD formats, and can handle all critical transcoding operations, including SD/HD conversion, PAL/NTSC conversion, logo insertion, color space conversion, color correction, closed captions extraction and more.
An open API allows for the creation of custom workflows or third-party applications, further extending ProMedia Carbon’s industry-leading flexibility. If this functionality is needed, please contact us for a custom software development estimate.
What is ProMedia Xpress?
ProMedia® Xpress enables faster-than-real-time transcoding and packaging of broadcast-quality SD and HD video for multiscreen VOD applications. It even supports the emerging 4K and Ultra HD formats. The high-performance solution allows content owners and service providers to significantly increase the content hours delivered while adhering to processing timetables and video quality targets in a cost-effective and scalable manner.
ProMedia Xpress employs Harmonic’s new MicroGrid™ parallel-computing technology to achieve a dramatic improvement in transcoding performance over stand-alone processing platforms. The application is managed by the Harmonic WFS™ file-based workflow system and integrates seamlessly with the ProMedia Carbon transcoder. The inclusion of stream packaging technology originally developed for ProMedia Package enables a complete file-based, multiscreen workflow that scales from several to hundreds of nodes and provides the operational integrity required in demanding 24/7 VOD environments.
Unlike ProMedia Carbon, ProMedia Xpress does not have a stand-alone version. All of ProMedia Xpress’ presets are accessed from within WFS.
ProMedia Xpress does not replace ProMedia Carbon. Xpress adds support to WFS for formats not available within ProMedia Carbon due to the 8-bit HD limitations.
What is WFS?
The WFS™ file-based workflow engine from Harmonic delivers powerful, intuitive control of carrier-grade transcoding farms for broadcast and over-the-top video production and delivery.
The software-based WFS system is used to control multiple ProMedia™ Carbon and ProMedia Xpress transcoding nodes. Open and extensible, WFS possesses a distributed nature that grants reliability and scalability while allowing the automated processing of transcoding tasks, failover support, job distribution management, job prioritization, load balancing, file transfer, status monitoring, and job notification. With the addition of the Conditional Workflows (CWF) service module, users can add an automated and scalable condition-check process to their transcoding farm.
WFS is a control and management platform for Harmonic’s ProMedia transcode engines ProMedia Carbon and Xpress.
